Christmas dinner, the long lulls and the touchy subjects

Your uncle tells the same story again, the conversation drifts towards politics or work, and the children are bored long before pudding. You would love a day when everyone laughs together, without weeks of planning.

A championship that runs all day

This is not a list of games to dip into at random. One person becomes the Games Master: twenty minutes of reading is enough to get everything ready. The games follow the shape of the day, each one scores points on the score sheet, and the champion writes their name on the Roll of Honour on the last page.

What's inside

  • The argument stopper

As soon as a touchy subject comes up, the Games Master taps a glass and draws an Absurd Debate card: ‘Are Brussels sprouts a vegetable or a punishment?’ Two volunteers, or the two people about to fall out, each defend one side for a minute.

  • Games for every moment

Drinks and nibbles, the table, the lull before pudding, the children, late night for grown-ups and the grand final: 6 chapters, plus 5 ready-made programmes, from a small gathering of 4 to 6 to the classic Christmas Day for 8 to 12.

  • The children have their own games

A real mystery with eight clues to hide around the house, a treasure hunt with eight riddles, A Letter from Father Christmas, The Elf Says, The Mystery Stocking… The children score Championship points too.

  • Over 250 cards ready to cut out

Secret missions, absurd debates, forfeits, charades on three levels, Would You Rather cards, Pudding Thieves roles, 12 bingo cards that are all different, slips and 30 Golden Elf award certificates.

  • Almost nothing to buy

What you need is nearly always at home already: a pen, slips of paper, a bowl, sometimes a loo roll or a few chocolates. The cards and sheets are in the PDF.

Questions

How do I receive the PDF?

Before paying, tick the box above the button: you ask to receive the file straight away and waive the 14-day withdrawal period, as for any digital content. Straight after payment, the confirmation page shows the ‘Download my PDF’ button. Keep that page: the button stays available there. It is a digital file, so no printed book is sent by post.

Is the PDF A4?

The pages are 21.6 × 27.9 cm (8.5 × 11 in), which is US Letter size. On Letter paper, print at actual size. On A4 paper, choose ‘Fit to page’ in the print window: the page shrinks by about 3% and nothing is cut off.

Do I have to print everything?

No. The Games Master can read the rules on screen and print only the kit for the games you choose. In the book, every page to cut out is followed by a page left blank so that you can cut it out: no need to print those. A black-and-white printer is enough; the cover is the only colour page.

What ages is it for, and how many players?

The book is designed for ages 4 to 99 and for 3 to 20 players. Each game shows the suggested age and number of players: Christmas Musical Statues from age 4, The Case of the Missing Mince Pie for 6 to 12-year-olds, The Christmas Court from 12. The ‘Late Night, Grown-ups Only’ chapter is for teenagers and adults, the ‘With the Kids’ chapter for younger children.

Is it a translation of a French book?

It is the English edition of a French book by Zé (Éditions Zé), adapted for British families. It is set on Christmas Day, with pudding, crackers and Boxing Day leftovers, and the cards and lists were rewritten in English rather than translated word for word. Same 40 games, same layout: 165 pages, plus the colour cover and a licence page in the PDF.

Can I print it more than once?

Yes. The PDF is sold for personal and family use: print it as often as you need, in full or just the pages you want, for example to play again next year. Sharing the file (by email, online or on social media) and reselling it are not allowed.
