Printable Christmas games for the whole family

Party games for the days when the whole family is in one room: short rules, cards to cut out, and games where a 5-year-old and their grandad can play at the same table, with points on a score sheet for anyone who likes a family competition.

The Christmas Championship turns Christmas Day into one long family contest, British style, with pudding, crackers and Boxing Day leftovers. Its 40 games are spread over 6 chapters (Drinks and Nibbles, At the Table, Between Turkey and Pudding, With the Kids, Late Night, Grown-ups Only and The Grand Final), and 5 ready-made programmes run from a small gathering of 4 to 6 people to the classic Christmas Day for 8 to 12. One person acts as Games Master after about twenty minutes of reading; every game scores points and the champion's name goes on the Roll of Honour. The kit holds over 250 cards: secret missions, absurd debates, forfeits, charades on three levels, Would You Rather cards, 12 bingo cards that are all different and 30 Golden Elf certificates.

The 167-page PDF is US Letter (choose “Fit to page” on A4, about 3% smaller) with black-and-white inside pages, and you only print the kit for the games you choose. Want to make your own? Our guides explain how to run Christmas Day bingo and give you rhyming Christmas treasure hunt clues for the children.

Questions

Do I need to buy anything else?

Hardly ever. The cards, grids and sheets are in the PDF; for the rest you need a pen, slips of paper, a bowl and sometimes a loo roll or a few chocolates, things most homes already have.

From what age can children play?

The Christmas Championship is designed for ages 4 to 99, and every game shows its suggested age: Christmas Musical Statues from 4, The Case of the Missing Mince Pie for 6 to 12-year-olds, The Christmas Court from 12. One chapter is for the children and the “Late Night, Grown-ups Only” chapter is for teenagers and adults.

Can we play on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day?

The games follow the moments of a day (drinks, the meal, the lull before pudding, late evening) rather than a date, so many of them work just as well on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day or New Year's Eve. The cards and questions are all about Christmas, though.

How long does it take to prepare?

About twenty minutes of reading for the Games Master. Then print the kit in black and white and cut out the cards the day before: on the day itself, all that's left is to play.
